| Cops
see rise in petty crimes CAMP
MAKABULOS (PIO) This early, police
here have forecast an increase in
robberies and thefts as Christmas is just
a few months away.
Senior Supt. Mario R. Sandiego, police
provincial director advised the public
"to be extra careful in the coming
months" saying Christmas "is
also a season for robberies."
Sandiego also showed crime statistics
showing that crimes like rape, robberies,
and murders are more frequent during
weekends from Friday to Sunday
when most people are idle or not working.
"We find it necessary to advise
the public so they can take the proper
steps in order not to become potential
victims of robbers," Sandiego said.
To help improve police vigilance and
mobility, Tarlac Gov. Jose
"Aping" Yap said the provincial
government would provide three brand new
vehicles to the Tarlac Provincial Police
Office.
Sandiego said police visibility will
definitely be intensified to help deter
crimes. There will also be 40 new police
recruits to beef up the provincial police
force.
Meanwhile, studies conducted by Tarlac
police on crime frequency showed that
most crimes take place on Sundays,
followed by Fridays and Saturdays.
"The culprit or the cause, usually,
is excessive intake of intoxicating
liquor," Sandiego said
Robberies and thefts are prevalent on
weekends, from 9 p.m. to 12 midnight and
between 9 in the morning to 12 noon,
records show.
On other crimes from Jan. 1 to
present, 68 index crimes had occurred on
Sundays, 42 on Fridays, and 38 on
Saturdays. Index crimes are murder,
homicide, physical injuries, rape, crimes
against chastity, robbery, and theft.
Sandiego said they have
"intensified visibility patrols in
crime-prone areas, taking into
consideration the crimes that were
prevalently committed by day and by time
of occurrence."

- After
topping a recent survey on presidential
aspirants for 2004, Raul Roco was
enmeshed in allegations of graft and
corruption as secretary of the Department
of Education, as President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo was merely a poor third
to survey second placer, ousted former
President Joseph Estrada.
Shortly after Mrs. Arroyo ordered for an
investigation on the allegations, Roco
immediately resigned as DepEd secretary,
making him the third cabinet member to
abandon the GMA administration (the first
was former DOTC secretary Pantaleon
Alvarez and the second, Vice President
Tito Guingona, as secretary of foreign
affairs).
